I'm planning imaginary vacations.  I need something to look forward to.  I may not be able to take my imaginary trips for a few years but sometimes it's fun just to dream.  So my theme for this Friday Five will be vacations.

1.  If you could take a one-month trip anywhere in the world and money were not a consideration, where would you go?  Name your top three destinations.

2.  If you were going on a girlfriend getaway or a guys only weekend, where would you go and what would you do?  Does what happens in Vegas stay in Vegas?  Would your spouse/SO have a problem with you going on a trip without them?

3.  Describe the best vacation you've ever been on - this is a reality not fantasy question.

4.  Describe the worst vacation you've ever been on.

5.  Is there anyplace on the planet that you have absolutely zero desire to ever visit?

1.  If you could take a one-month trip anywhere in the world and money were not a consideration, where would you go?  Name your top three destinations.

I've always wanted to go to Egypt so that would be a top destination.  I would like to go on a trip and see all of the European castles.  And for a pure adventure, I would like to kayak down the Amazon, see some parrots and monkeys and pirranhas.

2.  If you were going on a girlfriend getaway or a guys only weekend, where would you go and what would you do?  Does what happens in Vegas stay in Vegas?  Would your spouse/SO have a problem with you going on a trip without them?

Though a spa sounds tempting, I think I would rather go to an Art and Soul art workshop.  I don't think hubby would mind if this was the destination.

3.  Describe the best vacation you've ever been on - this is a reality not fantasy question.

My best vacation was going to Disney World with my hubby and boys.  There is something magical about seeing how excited they are watching the parades, meeting the characters, riding the rides.  I do think they were at a perfect age when it still seems "real" to them.  It's been about five years and they still talk about it occassionally.  I have to say that we don't go on a lot of vacations so that's another reason this one stands out.

4.  Describe the worst vacation you've ever been on.

I really don't have any of the travel horror stories.  I guess the worst thing I can remember is camping when it rained the whole weekend and we didn't get to do anything.

5.  Is there anyplace on the planet that you have absolutely zero desire to ever visit?

Anyplace that is supercold, Antartica, the North Pole, Mt. Everest.  I have no need to see those places.

Good to see the "Fives" again. It is harder and harder to find stuff lately.

1. England, Japan, San Diego
2. This one is easy but I think a lot of people won't believe me...don't want one. I don't do well without MamaCharlie around...nothing would be much fun.
3. In 1979 we took off for what was going to be a weekend and spent more than a week traveling around southern Bavaria. Ten years later we repeated it, only with my sister and her family in tow...two wonderful vacations.
4. Haven't had all that many and most of them were pretty good. The worst ones were the PCS moves and visiting family in Phoenix and San Diego along the way. Too much stress.
5. Former Eastern Bloc nations, Russia, China, Vietnam and the rest of southeast Asia, Southwest Asia, India and the rest of central Asia, South America, Africa, North & South Poles, Any island smaller than Australia, Australia, Mexico, Canada, Alaska...and a few others.

1. Germany! I would love to spend a month there again.
Second would be Australia, and third would be a Caribean Cruise
2. I would not worry about what stays as mine would be the Superbowl!
3. Christmas 91 - It was so great!
4. Summer of 86. I got burned, cooked, and stung!
5. Boston or new York.

1.  If you could take a one-month trip anywhere in the world and money were not a consideration, where would you go?  Name your top three destinations.

Israel. The money issue is not important. But I always love to spend a month in Israel to learn.

2.  If you were going on a girlfriend getaway or a guys only weekend, where would you go and what would you do?  Does what happens in Vegas stay in Vegas?  Would your spouse/SO have a problem with you going on a trip without them?

It wouldn't be a weekend but a week. As for the destination... wait for it!

3.  Describe the best vacation you've ever been on - this is a reality not fantasy question.

I don't like vacations. But the best getaway I was on was studying in Haifa University in the summer.

4.  Describe the worst vacation you've ever been on.

When I was a kid my parents forced me to stay with them in a holiday flat in a little Bavarian village. HATED the place. HATED HATED HATED it.

5.  Is there anyplace on the planet that you have absolutely zero desire to ever visit?

California and Florida, I guess. Also Syria, "Saudi" Arabia, and Zimbabwe.

Egypt, the land of European castles.

Wow, I guess you won't be going on the Amazing Race anytime soon.

This one is easy but I think a lot of people won't believe me...don't want one. I don't do well without MamaCharlie around...nothing would be much fun.

That is sweet.  It almost makes up for you offering to give everyone leg rubs on LW's thread. lolz

2. I would not worry about what stays as mine would be the Superbowl!

That would be a fun one.  Now I want to add all of the tennis majors to my list.

When I was a kid my parents forced me to stay with them in a holiday flat in a little Bavarian village. HATED the place. HATED HATED HATED it.

Ah those, fabulous family vacations.  I guess their were no cute Bavarian girls to distract you?

Egypt, the land of European castles.

You know those were one and two, right?  I should have said the Egyptian pyramids but i want to see more than that.  I want to see all the places that "normal" tourists don't get to see.  I don't know how you arrange that but it would be great.  I think I'll discover a hidden tomb just for the heck of it too.

Egypt, the land of European castles.

I understood Loca - but Leauki putting them together was funny.

Not in that little three house village, there weren't.

"Egypt, the land of European castles."

You know those were one and two, right?

1. If you could take a one-month trip anywhere in the world and money were not a consideration, where would you go? Name your top three destinations.

Japan, Japan, Japan. I miss home. More than that, I want to see everything I missed growing up. As a child and teen the thought of ever leaving didn't cross my mind. The touristy stuff was not appealing but I have a great love for the temples, gardens, and natural beauty preserved away from the cities. I want to go home and know my home.

2. If you were going on a girlfriend getaway or a guys only weekend, where would you go and what would you do? Does what happens in Vegas stay in Vegas? Would your spouse/SO have a problem with you going on a trip without them?

I have a girlfriend getaway coming up when one of my best girl-pals flies to Naples for two weeks of reserve training. We've tossed around going to Nice to learn the art of perfume making, Prague to see the old city, and the beaches of Split or Dubrovnik.

I love hanging with her but I always miss Ock when we're apart. The world is less shiny when he isn't there to experience what I'm experiencing. I find myself thinking, "He would love this so much."

3. Describe the best vacation you've ever been on - this is a reality not fantasy question.

Staying at home and hanging with my honey. He travels so much for work and traveling is just stressful for me. I prefer to live someplace I want to experience.

4. Describe the worst vacation you've ever been on.

Driving across the US with the parents and little-bro shortly after moving to the US. I was 16, mad about leaving Japan, my extended family, friends and everything I knew.

5. Is there anyplace on the planet that you have absolutely zero desire to ever visit?

There are definitely places low on my list but none I have zero desire to visit. I love the ocean so heading to any destination that is land locked or desert would have to have some incredible pull to get me there.

1. If you could take a one-month trip anywhere in the world and money were not a consideration, where would you go? Name your top three destinations.

Israel.  I'd like to see the holy land, and spend time exploring.

Australia.  I'd like to see all the touristy stuff....then go to a bar in the outback..or as close as possible and drink, eat, talk with the locals.

Deserted Island (anywhere), with a yacht right off shore.

2. If you were going on a girlfriend getaway or a guys only weekend, where would you go and what would you do? Does what happens in Vegas stay in Vegas? Would your spouse/SO have a problem with you going on a trip without them?

Somewhere in the southwest, on a dude ranch, running cattle, sleeping outside in sleeping bags.  When it was all over, I'd want a massage.  My husband wouldn't care at all.  He knows I need alone time..or time with friends.

3. Describe the best vacation you've ever been on - this is a reality not fantasy question.

It's a draw between Hawaii (where we did everything touristy) and Long Beach in the Phillipines.  Great beaches, food, and shopping!

4. Describe the worst vacation you've ever been on.

Alaska.  Seven months pregnant.  New Year's Eve.  Camping 100 miles from the nearest other person.  40 below Zero.  Nuff said.

5. Is there anyplace on the planet that you have absolutely zero desire to ever visit?

North Pole.

1. If you could take a one-month trip anywhere in the world and money were not a consideration, where would you go? Name your top three destinations.

I would want to go back and explore all of Hawaii's islands. I really regret that we never visited any other island.

Ireland.

Somewhere in the Carribean.

2. If you were going on a girlfriend getaway or a guys only weekend, where would you go and what would you do? Does what happens in Vegas stay in Vegas? Would your spouse/SO have a problem with you going on a trip without them?

My girls had a weekend in San Francisco last month and I was unable to go. We are planning an '09 trip to VEGAS!! Adrian cares, but he wouldn't stop me.

3. Describe the best vacation you've ever been on - this is a reality not fantasy question.

I don't guess we've ever *really* had a vacation. Always little mini weekend things. We had a great time at Lake Altus, OK, and plan to go again this summer.

4. Describe the worst vacation you've ever been on.

Again, not really a vacation, but my visit to Texas last summer was pretty miserable for many reasons I won't go into here.

5. Is there anyplace on the planet that you have absolutely zero desire to ever visit?

The midwest. Why? What's the point? Oooh farms and strip-malls. Exciting. You think they'll have a Chilis there?

1.  If you could take a one-month trip anywhere in the world and money were not a consideration, where would you go?  Name your top three destinations.

Key West, England, Switzerland

Normally he doesn't, but for a longer trip...possibly!

3.  Describe the best vacation you've ever been on - this is a reality not fantasy question.

When we lived in NY we (entire family) went home for three weeks of vacation in Jamaica and did all the fun stuff, it was great!

4.  Describe the worst vacation you've ever been on.

None, thank heavens!

5.  Is there anyplace on the planet that you have absolutely zero desire to ever visit?

The middle East is up there for me!

on May 09, 2008

Key West,

That sounds like fun.

The midwest. Why? What's the point? Oooh farms and strip-malls. Exciting. You think they'll have a Chilis there?

Hey I'm from the midwest and we would also go and watch the Amish people make cheese.

Again, not really a vacation, but my visit to Texas last summer was pretty miserable for many reasons I won't go into here.

Except for the highlight of your trip of meeting the wonderful and fabulous Locamama IRL - lol

Yeah that doesn't sound like fun.

We've tossed around going to Nice to learn the art of perfume making, Prague to see the old city, and the beaches of Split or Dubrovnik.

So cultured.

Probably, if going with the guys, to Vegas. What would we do? Heh...

3. Describe the best vacation you've ever been on - this is a reality not fantasy question.

Port Lavaca, Texas believe it or not! Salt water fishing and LOTS of beer drinking with the guys...

4. Describe the worst vacation you've ever been on.

Never had a bad vacation.

5. Is there anyplace on the planet that you have absolutely zero desire to ever visit?

Africa.

She is...I'm not. The beaches of Croatia are high on my list, though.

People make places special for me.

My thesis mentor is from Croatia, as are two of the PhD grads I worked with. The history and stories they tell me, as well as the pictures they share draw me to the country...especially the shore.

I have family in Germany and my mentor splits his time between Berlin, Vienna, Zagreb, and Providence. I want to return to Germany and learn more about my paternal roots. Vienna was beautiful but the peace of the countryside really embraced me.

Ock and I loved Dublin when we visited. Now one of my best friends lives there and the place is so much more special. I can't wait to go back and hang with him and his family. I also have a friend from Galway. If I were to settle outside of the US or Japan, Galway would be on the top of my list for the people, culture, and beauty.

In two weeks I head to Thailand for just over two weeks of work and some play. The more I read about the country the more I know I am going to enjoy my time there. The Thais are predominantly Buddhist so a visit to the major temples is high on my "to do" list. Of course, there's the food and I am such a foodie. I may have an opportunity to go hiking through one of their protected areas for bird watching. The diversity of wildlife is stunning! I'll have my camera along and will upload pictures while I am there.

Thinking of places of beauty... In the future I'll have the opportunity to live in Lima, Cairo and/or Jakarta. All three places are rich in history and diverse beauty. Of the three, Lima calls me...the Amazon is a beautiful mystery.

There are so many places I would love to experience and I figure at some point I will. Now if I could just get beyond my dislike of traveling. I love it when I am at my destination, but the getting there is just not fun.
