I do it all. Get my valuable input on everything from politics to music to movie quotes to my favorite tv shows and websites. I'll add some things about home, family, marriage, kids, cooking. It's everything you never wanted to know about my crazy life.

This just burns me up.  Some idiot has decided that he has the right to ask Spanish speakers to show their social security cards at his store.  He threatened to call ICE but didn't actually call.  Here's the newsflash for everyone, just because someone is speaking Spanish it does not mean that they are illegal aliens.  There are millions of Spanish speakers who are United States citizens.  I have a good friend who is bilingual who has never even been to Mexico-land.

I hope people boycott his business and I hope that the state charges him with unfair sales practices.   Idiot.  Oh and the customers were Dominican born but ARE U.S. citizens.

I am bilingual, and I've never been to Mexiville. Does that mean I have to start showing my Social Security card, too? It's not a government office where 'official languages' have credence.

I hope he gets boycotted right out of town, but he won't. He'll be the posterchild, the face of the 'new rebellion'.

Whatever. I'm in Europe, losers.

You may want to remind this idiot that Puerto Ricans born and raised in Puerto Rico are American Citizens from day 1. I'm a Puerto Rican born and raised in the US but speak fluent Spanish without accent because my mom spoke very little English.

Zoo, I am going to need you to Private Message me an image of your social security card.  If you know Spanish, you must be illegal and I may have to call ICE on you.

I really hope not.

You'd better keep your Social Security card handy if you want to buy a refrigerator from this idiot.

As a business owner this idiot has the right to refuse to do business with anyone he chooses, but to demand Social Security cards or any other form of identification beyond that required for the transaction itself (such as accepting a check) is not only well beyond his right as a business owner but could well be illegal to boot.

The guy is obviously a moron and proves that left wingers aren't the only loons in the world. The right wing loons are just as bad.

I don't think that's true unless he operates a private club.  If he serves the public, he can't refuse to do business with Spanish speakers etc.

If I had a store all I would want anybody to show me is their MONEY. But then I'm weird like that...

Sorry, that simply isn't true. Speaking a certain language doesn't place one in a protected class. If his refusal is based upon language the civil rights laws don't apply as language spoken is not even covered and he could have a defense in court.

Even when people are in a protected class under civil rights laws businesses can still refuse service under certain circumstances. Civil rights laws do provide some legal recourse for certain classes of people if they have been wrongly refused equal treatment, but the courts do also recognize the rights of the individual business owners as well and consider each case individually based upon it's own merits. Making blanket statements like "he can't refuse to do business with Spanish speakers etc." is simple minded and inaccurate.

Of course that's not what this story is about, it's about some asshat thinking he's the enforcer of immigration laws.

According to the article, Richardson is likely in violation of a state law that prohibits unfair sales practices, as well as state laws "prohibiting discrimination on the basis of race or national origin in places of public accommodation

Which is debatable and would have to be decided by a court just as I remarked above. The real point is the guy doesn't have a legal right to play immigration enforcer. Why do some people feel the need to chase after secondary issues when the obvious primary one will do just fine?

Gosh Mason, have you always been this belligerant or is it new? Okay, I'll take the wussy way out and say, you're right, you're right, you're always right. - lol.

Actually, you are just being a bit persistent just because this is upsetting to you (as it is to many of us). Mason is simply taking the logical route and accepting that while the situation is upsetting, this man "could" get away with nothing more than a slap on the wrist. It's one of those situations where you may not always get what you want and you just have to accept that.
